Solanco Girl Friends is a social activity for girls in 4th & 5th grades with a focus on FUN things for the girls to do while making new friends. The program is taking a break for the summer but watch for information on its return in the Fall.
The primary goal of this program, which kicked off in 2019, is to provide a safe environment for girls to build healthy relationships with other girls. The hope is that these new relationships will help them transition into middle school. Solanco Girl Friends have been held on the third Thursday of each month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the SECA Rec Center.
Renee Rogers — who has a set of 5th-grade twins (a boy and a girl) — organized Solanco Girl Friends and recently told the Solanco Advertiser why.
“It might be their personalities, but I have found that my son is more comfortable moving in and out of friendships and adjusting when friendships don’t go well,” Rogers told the Advertiser. “What I’ve found with my daughter is she has a more emotional reaction when things don’t go well in friendships. When I talked with (other mothers) they said their daughters had difficulty adjusting, too.”
Quarryville Guidance Counselor Mary Humphries contributed resources and suggestions for Girl Friends activities, reported the Advertiser in its March 13 edition. The girls decorated cupcakes during the inaugural meeting in February — an example of the type of non-elaborate activities ahead.
“I found with the cupcake thing, it doesn’t need to be overly complicated,” Rogers told the paper. “It’s (about) providing girls the opportunity to have fun and a forum to connect. They figured the rest out. It’s (about) the conversation and the shared experiences.”
